Mumbai University to launch academic demat account

Mumbai University to launch academic demat account

Soon all the students of Mumbai University and its affiliated colleges will have an ‘Academic Demat Account’, that will allow them to maintain all their academic records that can be accessed anytime by themselves and those whom the student permits access.

The ambitious initiative of MU to start a digital depository for all academic documents of students will be launched this week. According to officials the service is being offered through the Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL).

The initiative is a first-of-its-kind across the country said Dinesh Bhonde, Controller of Examinations, Mumbai University. Bhonde said the idea was to provide a facility to maintain academic documents like marksheets etc in a system like a demat account, wherein people store their share certificates and financial documents digitally due to the high level of security it provides.

“The depositories maintain a high level of security and documents kept in these depositories cannot be tampered with or misused by anyone except the owner of this demat account. Similarly, we are launching a depository wherein students passing out of the MU will be able to maintain digital copies of their academic achievements in their Academic Demat Account,” added Bhonde.

The facility will enable students to provide verified and certified copies without hassles. “Currently, students applying for visas, jobs and transfers to other universities require verified copies of their marksheets, certificates and degrees that the varsity certifies. As the process is lengthy and time consuming, verification through the digital medium will save a lot of time and will be secure too,” said Bhonde.

“The process of setting up the academic demat account is in process and will start as soon the initiative is launched this week,” said Bhonde.
